This is continuation post of
Coorg and
Mysore trips. We visited Srirangapatna on the fourth and last day of our trip. Srirangapatna is
nearby Mysore(21 KMs) and is on the way to Bangalore. We started from Mysore around 11.30 AM and reached Srirangapatna by 12.15 PM.
We visited
Tipu Sultan's mosque, but we didn't go inside as we were running late for the famous
Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple which gets
closed by 1.30 PM. Here we didn't realize that it has a special ticket that can speed up the queue. So we had to wait in queue for almost an hour! Do take a ticket, queues are unbearable and total waste of time. I have seen the statue of Ranganatha Swamy lying down many times in photos, finally seeing it live was great.

We were hungry and tired by the time we came back from the temple. We glimpsed the place where Tipu's body was found on our way and went to a restaurant for lunch after roaming a little bit for better food. We quickly had our lunch and started off to
Gumbaz, where Tipu and his family are buried. It had lot of
tombs and Tipu's tomb was inside the core building.

We then visited
Tipu Sultan's summer palace. From the outside, it's entirely covered with green blinds to provide shade for the building and thus protect the art on it from sun and dust. Inside it was very beautiful with
wall murals everywhere. It's partially converted into a
museum by showcasing photos and
history of Tipu's kingdom and wars. It's very sad to see that the art on the murals is slowly getting lost - we felt that it needs better care just like Jaganmohan Palace in Mysore.

One can easily spot
Wellesley bridge when they are in Srirangapatna.
We didn't cover all the places in Srirangapatna because of time constraints, but we did manage to visit the most famous ones. We then started to Bangalore and ended our trip :)

It must be so nice to have visited the Sultan's summer palace. Oh my, it must have been so nice to own a summer palace! Anyway, I hope they do get to care more for the wall murals. Those are invaluable pieces of history.
ReplyDeleteThose buildings are majestic! I am amazed at how people in the early times were able to build such beautiful structures. Hopefully I get to visit India someday to appreciate all that beauty!
ReplyDeleteI needed to google where Srirangapatna, haha. So it is in India. I've never been to India, and not sure when. But that's lovely temple/mosque. Never been a fan of temples, usually I just go there for pictures :)
ReplyDeleteI love its architecture! I believe it makes Srirangapatna a very special place. Now I have a +1 place to visit during our next trip to India! :)
